All about Elm Class

Welcome to Elm class! We are one of the year 1 classes at Westlea and we enjoy making new discoveries and having lots of fun!

Our class teacher is Miss Gault and our LSAs are Miss Miller and Miss Green.

We have had a very busy first term together in year 1 and we have learned so much already! Here is what some of the children have said about their time in Elm class so far:

"I enjoyed learning all about Autumn!"

"I like making pictures and I liked learning about equals (in maths)"

"My favorite part of year 1 is when we are doing our work because I can learn what my sister learns!"

"Year 1 is fun. The best thing I've learned in year 1 is reading."

We like to get outside whenever we can and learn hands on, we really enjoy learning about the seasons throughout the year.

Coming up in term 2 we will be learning about the great fire of London in history and we will be learning about the weather in science! We are beginning to explore addition and subtraction in greater depth and we are picking up the pace in phonics phase 5 to make bigger pieces of writing!

In art we will be exploring printing, we can't wait to show you our class gallery!

Reading and phonics.

We are currently taking small steps to promoting independence and responsibility with our own learning and self care.  We encourage the children to have a go even if we find something tricky as making mistakes is how we learn.

We are having a big focus on phonics and developing early reading skills.  Supporting your child with home reading is invaluable! You should be aiming to read at least 5 times a week.  Remember to record it in your reading record.  We count up the number of reads every term and the children will receive a certificate.

During Term 2 we will be sending home pick and mix homework activities.  You will have the chance to choose which homework activity to complete each week.  You will receive points for each piece of homework you complete.
