Vision and Values
Westlea is a school where anything and everything is possible. The Westlea Vision and Values have evolved from the desire for all of us to: ‘Dream, Believe and Achieve’ thought L.O.V.E. (Learning, Opportunities, Vision and Educational Excellence).
Learning for life: Everyone within the Westlea community sees learning as a way of life, not just something we do at school. The children are enthusiastic as they develop learning tools for life, by engaging in a cross-section of opportunities beyond the curriculum. Learning is ambitious, inclusive and engaging. We expect the children to take responsibility for their own and each other’s learning right from the the earliest opportunities. The principles of Healthy Schools, is evident in all aspects of school life.
Opportunities for all: We believe that every child has a talent and the ability to excel in a whole variety of fields. Sometimes, they just need to be given the opportunity or for someone to 'believe in them'. At Westlea we encourage all children to take part in as many activities as possible both in and out of school. Our curriculum provides exciting opportunities for different types of learning and our wide range of extra -curricular activities gives everyone a chance to find ‘their thing’.
Vision and Dreams: We believe that every child has the right to receive an education of the highest standard. Children need to aim high and have big dreams. They are taught ways of achieving their goals by breaking them down into planned, achievable steps. This, coupled with knowing how to be resilient and having the courage to never give up, leads our whole community to be highly aspirational and our children to become well-rounded citizens who have the self-belief and the skills needed to lead successful, happy and fulfilled lives.
Educational Excellence: At Westlea we take enormous pride and pleasure in nurturing all of our children from the start of their education, right through to being ready to start secondary school. We believe that by caring for their pastoral needs in a safe, secure environment, children will have the courage to be themselves, feel totally accepted, accept differences in others and will enjoy being a valued member of the Westlea family. We teach our children to care for each other and show respect to all, so that we can provide the climate for everyone to grow and reach their full potential.
Values at Westlea
At Westlea we understand the responsibility we have as a school to support children in the development of life values. We have recognised that children need to be given the opportunity to understand that they have a choice in the way that they behave. Therefore, we introduce a new value every week, which is linked to the Jigsaw Scheme of Work.
British Values at Westlea
The British Values as defined by the DfE are: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith. These are at the heart of the school vision and are taught throughout the year through assemblies, fundraising, visitors and various events in the school year.
Why are Values important?
Our values should be intrinsic, therefore determine by how we think and our behaviour. They are the principles or standards that act as the general guides to how we function in society. Values are our beliefs about what is worthwhile, the ideals for which we strive and how we treat each other. They help us to make decisions and evaluate our own actions and those of others.
